School Buses, Snow Days, and Getting Kids to School
PEI school closures are announced by 6:30 a.m., not the night before. Here is exactly where to check, what a system-wide shutdown means versus a partial closure, and why you shouldn't call the school.
1. Closures Are a Morning-Of Decision
PSB and CSLF make every effort to announce weather-related cancellations by 6:30 a.m. the day of, not the evening before. If a decision can't be made by then, a one-hour delay is announced instead, with a further update by 8:00 a.m.
2. What Each Announcement Actually Means

Closures can also happen partway through the day if conditions worsen; watch for updates rather than assuming a normal-start morning guarantees a normal dismissal.
3. Where to Actually Check
- The PSB website (for English and French Immersion schools) or CSLF website (for French First Language schools)
- Local radio: CFCY, Ocean 100, Hot 105.5, CBC Radio PEI
- CBC PEI's Storm Centre, which aggregates school, government, and business closures in one place
- PEI Road Conditions (511.gov.pe.ca) for driving conditions specifically
Do not call the school, the board office, or radio stations for closure information. Phone lines need to stay open for actual emergencies; every official source publishes the same information simultaneously.
4. If Buses Get Held at School
If the Department of Transportation or RCMP recommend buses stay off the roads, students may be kept at school past normal dismissal, unless a parent or designated adult picks them up directly. This is announced the same way as morning closures: radio and board website.
5. Confirming Your Bus Zone in the First Place
Each board organizes schools by "Family of Schools" for zoning and busing. Use the PSB or CSLF online bus planning tool to confirm your specific stop and pickup time; this is also the tool to check any time you move within the province, since a new address can mean a new zoned school entirely.
