Checking Hospital and Walk-In Clinic Wait Times in PEI Before You Go
PEI runs four hospital emergency departments and a rotating set of walk-in clinics. Here is how to check real wait times before you go, and when to skip the wait entirely.
1. Four Emergency Departments Cover the Whole Island
PEI runs four hospital emergency departments: Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, Prince County Hospital in Summerside, Kings County Memorial Hospital in Montague, and Western Hospital in Alberton. Wait times at each swing hard by time of day and day of week, and they rarely move in sync with each other.
2. Check Before You Drive Over
CPEI's live Hospital & Clinic Wait Times page pulls real-time data straight from Health PEI: how many patients are in the waiting room, how many are already being seen, and the estimated wait by triage level.

A "Level 3 (Urgent)" wait of 4-5 hours at one hospital and 1-2 hours at another on the same afternoon is normal. Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, the Island's largest and busiest ED, often posts the longest queues simply because of population size, not because care is slower there.
3. Walk-In Clinics Are Not Guaranteed First-Come, First-Served
Charlottetown alone has multiple walk-in options, including the Downtown Walk-in Clinic and Sherwood Walk-in Clinic, plus pharmacy-based clinics in Stratford, Kensington, Montague, and Morell. Sessions get cancelled on short notice, registration windows are narrow (some open only in the hour before the session and fill fast), and posted hours shift week to week. Always check same-day status and call to confirm before you drive over.
4. When to Skip the Wait Entirely
- Life-threatening emergency: call 911, don't drive yourself
- Health advice, unsure if it's an emergency: call 811, Health PEI's nurse line
