Extracurriculars on a Budget: Sports, Arts, and Libraries for Kids

PEI's public libraries run free weekly programs for every age from newborn to teen, and minor hockey and soccer registration windows open months before the season starts. Here is the actual calendar.

1. The Library Is a Genuine Extracurricular Resource

The Charlottetown Library Learning Centre and branches across the Province run free, recurring programs by age group:

Age GroupProgramTypical Schedule
0-12 monthsWiggle, Giggle, ReadWeekly
1-3 yearsToddler TimeWeekly
0-5 yearsFamily/Saturday StorytimeWeekly
6-12 yearsCreative Kids Club / Crafty KidsWeekly, after school
TeensTeen Volunteer Club, book clubs, tabletop game nightsBi-weekly/monthly

Most branches also run a makerspace with sewing machines, a Cricut, and digitization equipment, open for public use after a short orientation session. Check your local branch's schedule directly since exact days and times vary by location and season.

2. Minor Hockey Registration Opens in Late Summer

Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association (cmhapei.ca) and the Sherwood/Parkdale Rural Minor Hockey Association handle registration online, typically before the fall season starts. Register early; age divisions and team spots fill on a first-come basis.

3. Youth Soccer Registration Opens in Spring

Winsloe Charlottetown Royals FC and the Sherwood Parkdale Rangers Soccer Club run youth divisions from Timbits (U3-U9) through U18. Registration has historically opened in late March for the summer season, entirely online, with:

  • Family rates for 3 or more mini/youth players from the same household
  • A surcharge (roughly $15) for non-resident registrants outside the club's home municipality

4. Building a Realistic Weekly Schedule

Between a library program, a team sport, and school itself, most PEI families end up managing at least two separate registration calendars per season, one for recreation programs (open ongoing) and one for competitive sports (open on a fixed spring/fall window). Mark both registration windows on your calendar as soon as your child starts a new activity; missing a soccer or hockey registration date is far more common than missing a library drop-in.
